Bali and Batam connectivity: travel eSIM, roaming or a local SIM?

For a short Batam visit, check your home carrier’s Indonesia roaming benefits first. For a longer Bali stay, compare roaming, a travel data eSIM and a local tourist SIM against your whole itinerary. Choose by allowance, expiry, setup and phone-number needs. There is no universal cheapest choice.

Choose around your trip

A short Batam break and a longer Bali holiday are planning scenarios, not rules about either destination. For a brief visit, start with any existing roaming benefit and its extra cost. For a longer stay, check whether the allowance and validity last until departure, and what happens when data runs out.

Decision checklist
Option When to consider it Check before choosing
Home-carrier roaming Your account has a suitable Indonesia benefit Eligibility, activation, expiry, fair use and automatic extra charges
Travel data eSIM You need data without ordinary local calls or SMS Handset support, installation, package networks and local coverage
Local tourist SIM You want to investigate a local service, especially if a local number matters Number and call inclusion, registration, collection and support

Roaming: inspect your own account

For Singtel subscribers, ReadyRoam Neighbours and UnlimitedRoam Neighbours list Indonesia, with different validity and fair-use conditions. Singtel’s FAQ says an exhausted ReadyRoam bundle automatically adds the same bundle at the same rate within the existing validity. Monthly recurring excess can be charged differently. Check Singtel’s roaming plans and conditions against your account.

If you use another provider, check your own home carrier’s terms, wherever you are travelling from. Confirm Indonesia inclusion, required activation, preferred networks and the rules for exceeding your allowance. Singtel’s conditions apply to its subscribers and do not establish what another carrier includes.

Travel eSIM: check the exact package

Airalo markets fixed-data and unlimited Indonesia data eSIM packages. Its listing identifies INDOSAT and additional networks, but network details need checking for the selected package. Inspect Airalo’s Indonesia package details for the option you intend to buy. These data-only packages do not establish an Indonesian phone number or ordinary voice calls and SMS.

For a trip covering both Batam and Bali, rely on one Indonesia package only after checking that its terms and local coverage support both itineraries. A national listing cannot establish signal at your hotel or a remote stop. Compare expiry and replenishment conditions alongside the allowance; inspect fair-use terms before choosing an unlimited option.

Local tourist SIM: confirm eligibility and collection

Telkomsel’s Tourist Prepaid Card eligibility FAQ names international tourists and passport plus IMEI validation. IMEI is the handset’s identifying number. These requirements describe that operator product; they do not establish registration requirements for every Indonesian mobile service.

Before relying on this route, confirm availability and collection at your arrival destination, required documents and handset eligibility. Do not assume Batam collection is available. If a local number is your reason for choosing it, verify that the selected package includes the number, calls or SMS you need.

Prepare before departure

On iPhone (iOS) or Android, confirm that your exact handset supports the chosen SIM or eSIM and follow the provider’s instructions for your device. Save essential directions and connection instructions offline, and check how to reach support.

On arrival, test the intended data line and check your home-line settings to avoid unplanned data use. Plan separately for a ferry, flight or remote route: do not assume land-based mobile coverage will provide a connection there.
