Travel eSIM installed but no data: a safe troubleshooting checklist

Check the package first, then the installed eSIM, selected data line and connection settings. Our recommended sequence is below: change one setting at a time and test briefly. Protect the home line from unplanned data use, and do not delete the travel eSIM.

Work through these checks in order

Our recommended diagnosis order
Stage Check Action
Package Destination, validity and allowance Confirm coverage and usable data.
Installation Profile visible; setup complete Inspect settings and provider status.
Data selection Travel line enabled and selected Choose it for data; check airplane mode is off.
Network connection Required roaming, APN and network Follow your package’s connection instructions.

1. Separate installation from package readiness

Seeing an eSIM in settings is only one check. Confirm your destination is covered, the package is valid and data remains before altering connection settings.

For Airalo, identify whether your app shows My eSIMs or Packages: these are different workflows. Packages uses one eSIM per device, with destination packages added to it; do not assume every trip needs another installation. Its labels include Set up needed, Ready to use, In use or Active, and Used or Finished. A package in this experience starts when the device connects to a supported network in its covered destination. Initial setup requires stable Wi-Fi, an unlocked device and eSIM compatibility. Follow Airalo’s setup and status guide for the experience shown.

2. Select travel data and protect the home line

Check that the travel line is enabled and selected for mobile data. Before changing home-line settings, establish how essential carrier calls and SMS will reach you. Our recommendation is to keep home-line data roaming off while troubleshooting and avoid selecting that line for data.

iPhone (iOS): Apple’s English Asia roaming guidance explains how Dual SIM users select the number whose roaming setting they want to change. Enable travel-line roaming only if its package requires it. Keeping both lines enabled can still incur home-carrier roaming fees; check availability and charges with your carrier.

Apple’s US English travel-eSIM guidance says FaceTime and iMessage can continue using the home identity when only a travel eSIM is used on a supported iPhone. This does not establish carrier SMS or cellular-call reachability, or free roaming. Check device, carrier and regional requirements; neither Apple page establishes universal eligibility.

Android: inspect the controls for your phone and SIM. Menus vary by manufacturer and software version; do not assume a roaming switch affects the same lines on every Android device.

3. Follow the package’s connection instructions

Airalo users with My eSIMs should follow the applicable eSIM troubleshooting instructions. If your app shows Packages, use the separate Packages troubleshooting guide. Apply only the roaming, supported-network and APN settings—access point settings used for data—specified for your experience and package. Do not copy another package’s APN or select an unsupported network.

4. Check limits, then escalate

Plan limits can exhaust data or reduce speed. As an Android example for Google Pixel only, Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → App data usage shows usage. A configured data limit can turn mobile data off. Phone and carrier measurements may differ: check your provider’s balance and limits. See Google’s Pixel data-usage guidance.

After these checks, follow the provider’s connection-refresh instructions or restart, then test briefly. We recommend stopping before deleting the profile or attempting network or factory resets.
