When to install and activate a travel eSIM

Before departure, check your phone and package rules, then install using reliable internet when the validity policy permits. Connect at the appropriate destination. Treat purchase, installation, connection and validity as separate steps. Airalo is the provider example here; follow your own app and package instructions.

First, identify your Airalo workflow

Airalo distinguishes the public My eSIMs experience from a new Packages experience. In Packages, you set up one eSIM per device and add destination packages. Labels include Set up needed, Ready to use, In use or Active, and Used or Finished. Package validity begins when the device connects to a supported network in a covered destination.

Check your app against Airalo’s new setup guide. Do not assume every account needs a fresh installation for each trip, uses the older labels or follows the same validity trigger.

Before departure or after arrival?

Suggested timing, subject to your workflow and package
Step Before departure On arrival
Purchase Check coverage, workflow and any purchase-related deadline before buying. Follow the purchased package’s instructions.
Installation or setup Use stable internet if your validity policy permits early setup. If setup was deferred, arrange reliable internet first.
Connection Read the applicable connection instructions. Enable the intended connection and test it.
Validity Identify exactly what starts the clock. Check the package’s status and expiry.

Separate buying from the validity clock

For public My eSIMs, Airalo says buying before travel does not itself start validity. However, some packages require active use within a stated period after purchase. Installation alone may not count, and an unused profile may be recycled under the package policy. Read Airalo’s advance-purchase guidance before buying far ahead.

Also within public My eSIMs, validity can start at installation or connection to a supported network in the coverage area. Most packages use connection, but your package’s Validity Policy determines the trigger. If installation starts it, installing early uses validity before departure. Consult Airalo’s validity explanation; do not transfer this either-or rule to Packages. A fixed data allowance covers the whole validity period, rather than an equal amount each day.

Install using the instructions for your phone

Both iPhone (iOS) and Android need eSIM compatibility, a network-unlocked device and stable internet for Airalo installation. The Packages setup guide specifies stable Wi-Fi for initial setup. Check these requirements before purchase rather than assuming your phone qualifies.

iPhone (iOS): Airalo’s public My eSIMs instructions offer Connect Later if you have not arrived. Plan labels help identify each line. Use Airalo’s iPhone installation instructions where they match your workflow.

Android: Airalo’s public My eSIMs guide offers direct installation on supported devices, plus QR and manual methods. Follow Airalo’s Android setup instructions for your device; direct installation is conditional on support.

Connect, then check actual use

In public My eSIMs, Installed means the profile has been downloaded and configured; In Use means a mobile-network connection with a data session. Status visibility can vary. Follow that package’s connection instructions for the data line, roaming setting and any required APN, or access point name. An installed profile alone does not prove a working data connection; do not apply one roaming or APN rule to every provider.

Final checklist

  • Identify My eSIMs or Packages from your app.
  • Confirm compatibility, unlocking and reliable internet for setup.
  • Read your package’s validity trigger, expiry and any active-use deadline.
  • Follow your package’s connection instructions at the covered destination.
  • Test the intended connection. If the trigger or expiry is unclear, pause and ask Airalo before proceeding; this checklist cannot guarantee activation.
